Default tail light/brake light

Forward control to rear brake was hanging a little and the light I am assuming was on for an extended period of time. The filaments in the bulb looked ok but the contacts looked burnt. Put a new bulb in and no luck there. No running light or brake light now. 2007 xl1200 low. Any advice out there on what direction to head is much appreciated.

Thoroughly clean the contacts with an electrical cleaner.

As both lights share the same negative wire see if that has continuity to the ground at the engine crankcase. Do this with no power on the bike.

A voltmeter to check if the socket is getting power with brake applied.

A continuity tester to see if the brake light switch is still working. Do this with no power on the bike.
