Default 2007 HD Sportster 1200 Custom- Rusty bolts HELP

I’ve been detailing my 07 Sportster that I just bought a few weeks ago and I am looking for a solution for removing rust from some bolts and washers. Please see the pictures for the specific ones that are my main concern. I tried wd40 but that didn’t do much. I’ve read some other people’s comments about not removing them because they are torqued to a certain lb so don’t remove unless absolutely need to?? I bought some chrome caps but if I put them on then you will still see the rusty washers still... please help as I’m pretty particular thank you all for your time!

I would recommend going to your local Harley dealer and purchasing 8 new screws and washers that are rust free. Also, purchase 2 Rocker Cover gaskets to ensure a good seal. Also, purchase a Service Manual as it will provide you with the procedure to follow and the torque for the screws ( 120 - 168 in-lbs).

Thanks for for the suggestion. Instead of going to the dealer can’t I just order what I need through the link you provided me? Also do you know if I can get all 8 of those bolts out without removing the gas tank?

Maybe more expedient to go to the dealer as the hardware should be readily available, otherwise yes, you can order online?

Here is some more helpful info regarding rocker box gasket replacement http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...evo:engmech04a

Thanks for the link and info. What I’d like to do is replace each bolt/washer one by one so I don’t need a new gasket. So hopefully I can remove them all and replace one by one without removing the gas tank. Can this be done?

With a tooth brush and a metal cleaner you could probably get most of that off. You could also try a rust converter.

It is a shame the casing is chrome else a small wire brush in a Dremel would definitely clean up the screws, it might scratch the chrome badly.

Could I safely use that Loctite rust remover with the chrome casing surrounding the bolts and washers? I wouldn’t want to damage the chrome at all.

I'd rub gently; with that product, I found out that it doesn't need to be scrubbed in hard. Just smear it on thoroughly and wipe away after a while. It's not gonna be perfect though.
