Is the Sportster REALLY the fastest HD?

Not now. But 12 years ago when this thread was started things were different. The 96 CI motors were just coming out. The VROD was faster but if you were just talking air cooled Harleys the Sportster was pretty quick.

I'm new to this forum and feel like I need to defend the Sporty reputation just a little. I ride with 3 buddies, one on a 2019 Road glide, 114, one on 2019 CVO Street glide, 117, and the 3rd rides a 2019 Breakout. They all had at least 3000 miles on them, so new wasn't the issue. None of them could touch me from any point of playing around under 80 mph.The Breakout was the fastest of the three and the best out of the box. We were back and forth on runs so we called it even after 5. All runs were from a roll at various speeds with all the bikes. The Road glide and Street glide guys both went out and spent between $2k and $3k out of embarrassment to make their $30k & $40k bikes fast enough to play with the little guy, me on my 1200 sporty. Yes, now we all run pretty close and play well together up til 85/90 mph when the c.i. really shows off. But I'm still proud to ride my 1200 and keep them in their place for the most part.
When we ride we do between 200 and 350 miles a day. Living in Florida allows 12 month riding and the best is during the winter months. I've worked hard at making my sportster into a cruiser for comfort and still maintaining a look that is pleasing to "my" eyes. It gets a lot of compliments even sitting next to the new, shiny, expensive big boys! This is my 9th sportster and I have owned many H.D. models over the years along with metric and Big Dog bikes. Gotta love the sporty at my age, light weight, quick and easy to maintain.
Happy New Year and Ride Safe!

I guess it all depends on what you mean by "fastest". How important is that, though? I mean, how often are you gonna go that fast? If you hit the highway, you';re doing, what, 80 MPH or so? How much more top end do you need before you're just trying to kill yourself? At normal speeds, the 1200cc V-Twin should be able to keep up with just about any 96 cruiser.
