RE: Ignition Switch or Kill Switch
Use it.......This is what my Owner's Manual has to say.
Engine Stop Switch
Engine stop switch is located on the right handlebar control. The engine stop switch turns ignition ON or OFF and should be used at all times to stop the engine, especially in an emergency. To stop engine, push switch to position marked OFF - then turn key to OFF.

RE: Ignition Switch or Kill Switch
It's another 'safety feature' that Harley has added to their bikes over the years.
Good to get in the habit of using it, as it's main purpose is an 'emergency shutoff' in case you run into problems. If you use it all the time it's position becomes second nature, and it something were to happen your thumb could click it to shut the bike down instantly.
When I had my Sportster I used it most of the time, mainly because of the reaching involved to get to the ignition switch which is mounted down in front of the bike.
On my Big Twins the ignition switch is mounted right in front of you on the tank, and it's a lever instead of a key. Because of that I normally just use the ignition lever, and seldom bother with the "kill switch".

Why is it the safest...I find myself leaving the ignition on and possibly killing the battery if I use the kill switch... I use ignition and pull the key...habit and I don't kill the battery...

I always stop, put it in neutral, put the stand down, get off and walk around to the right side and shut the key off. (I just like to hear it idle a little longer)
