Default Forward Controls vs Mid Controls

I just bought a 2009 Nightster which has forward controls. I prefer to have mid controls. Is getting mid controls and simple matter of taking the extension rods out and putting the foot controls back in place? Or, are the actual foot controls different? In other words, do I need to replace everything? Thanks for the input.

You replace everything.

You can find someone that has mids and wants forwards and swap them, or keep an eye on the classifieds here, like I did, and buy a set of mid controls.

Mine came with forwards. Having only a 29-30" inseam, it was hard for me to reach. I did not like them for other reasons as well.

I bought a set of mids from the classifieds here, and sold my forwards for about 50% more.

I have a 30" inseam too, the forwards on the Sportster rotate my hips too much and put all my weight on my tailbone making long rides painful. Plus I feel like I have better control of the bike at slow speeds with the mids. It is nice to occasionally stretch out the legs, so I have a crash bar with highway pegs. Best of both worlds (or worst)

I bought my mids from the classifieds as well. Just put them on last week, haven't sold the forwards yet.

Sold mine on flebay. Some dude in HI bought them. I forget how much shipping I added to sale price, seems like it was $35 but still cost a little more than that to ship. I kinda overlooked AK and HI in the shipping details. No biggie that time. Same thing happened when I sold my tourmaster bags. Shipping has gone through the roof.

For future use the USPS has flat rate boxes you can use so the price is fixed anywhere in the US including Alaska and Hawaii.

Except that neither the long brake rods for the forwards, or saddlebags will fit in those tiny boxes.

Given the cost and popularity of forwards controls (though not my preference) you should be in fine shape going from forwards to mids.

My set up on just about all of the bikes I have and had is mids with highway pegs to temporarily stretch now and then.
