I cut them because I couldnt get the wires and connector out with the ignition/turn signal cluster initially. I just cut them so i could easily take it out. The space was to crowded to move things around. probably will just take off the headlamp next time, if there is a next time.

There is a reason the factory used a connector...
Your kind of electrical repair will turn this bike into an electrical nightmare down the road, do it properly...rant over.
I know it is the orange/white wire because that is the wire that is the accessory wire coming from the fuse.
Simply follow the wiring diagram in your service manual.

What's the correct way to do it? I ordered the part from HD and it didn't come with any pins. I didn't think cutting and resplicing the same wires together would be an issue. I'm not electrically inclined but would love to learn a bit more.
I bought the bike used and no service manual came with the bike. is there a copy available online somewhere?
Thanks

You buy the service manual from the dealer.
It will have the electrical wiring diagram.
It will also show a breakdown of each type of electrical connector and how to wire them.
Factory service manuals are expensive, but well worth the price. Don`t wast your money on an aftermarket manual, get the genuine HD manual.
Pins are available from dealer or aftermarket, you install them on the wires, then plug the new pins into the connector.

Would this be the same thing?

From manual library, the 2013 HD sportster service manual?

After calling up HD and speaking with the parts guy, I think I'll check the wiring in the throttle control assembly, it's really tight in there and maybe a pinched wire. He said to unscrew it and try running it. if it doesn't blow a fuse then a wire is pinched inside there.
Sounds like a good first step to me, rather than second guessing if the orange wire goes to the other orange wire.
