I’m having the same issue coming from a big Yamaha to an Electra Glide. I posted about the clutch friction zone being so narrow and was advised to ride it and adapt. It’s still a bit of a challenge to leave a dead stop properly but it’s getting better. More miles to come.

Maybe first gear seems so big because you aren't accelerating fast enough.

In my case, I just wasn't used to it yet. The MSF bikes were different to accelerate. I got the hang of it today, though. More throttle, then yes "feather" the clutch. All good. Had other issues today, but got the hang of that at least.

On my 1200 the tall first gear is only a problem when I go into the city, which I try to avoid. The city blocks are maybe 150yds long, if that and speeds never get over 25, so a PITA with fairly tall gears. Staying in first seems to rev too high, too long, and shifting to second, is only good for about 20 yds till I need to downshift.

Like I said, so far my solution has beed avoid the city. I don't agree with their politics anyway, so that makes it easier.

Totally agree with this statement about the bike and city riding and also agree with the politics too.
