Question Shifting issue

I have a 1983 sportster that is giving me a shifting problem. When I put it in 1rst gear it is a real bear to get out of 1rst. If I start out in 2nd gear I can ride and shift with no issues. I have changed shifter pawl springs because one was broken but still having the same problem. Does anyone out there have any advice on what might be my fix to this?????

You could try adjusting the primary chain tensioner. I replaced mine with an automatic chain tensioner and it did help. Adjusting the clutch is another idea to start.

I will look into the tensioner but I guess I should have mentioned that the bike is tough to get out of 1rst even if not running. I litteraly have to reach down and grab the shifter with my hand to yank it up out of 1rst. Thanks for the advice tho.

Talking Shifting

The one I have is a Hayden M6-XL5 automatic primary chain tensioner. I'm not selling them, but I am happy with the results I got.
