Default 96 1200CL Speedo Question

I picked up a 1996 Sportster 1200 CL the other day and the speedometer works, odometer works but the button won't change the display from Odometer to Trip. I pulled the back off and jumpered the button wires to see if the button was faulty but it still won't change. I've seen a few disassembly videos but none touch on getting to the circuit board on the back to see if a wire is broke or if I can find a bad component. Second, if I replace the speedometer with either a used unit or even a new unit from HD will the original milage transfer over? I've read it's stored in the speedo, it's stored in the ECU, or both. It's actually stuck on the Trip Meter but we picked it up with papers saying it's less than 10k miles on the bike. It's got it's original front tire from the date code 336 (33rd week of the 6 year of the decade) for pre 2000 tires and the rear is a 1100 for 11 week of 2000. Rear still has near New depth and the front is in the ragged edge. Both will be replaced. Just needs some serious cleaning up.
