I don't think you want the wheel off the ground but you do need a jack to get the swing arm in the right place so the new shocks are not having to be compressed when fitting.

For solo riding the standard springs maybe okay but for 2 up I think you will need the heavy duty springs.

Just OP slower and see you do have the HD springs.

What I think is missing is how the rate of the springs actually work with a given weight and the different lengths. Where is the cross over when it is best to select HD over SD?

It seems everyone is calling Progressive for this information so why not just publish it? Someone will tell me it is published and I will thank them but I didn't find it when I bought my 430s.

I was confused what he was referring to when he kept mentioning swingarm. He seem to be meaning the wheel

The shock absorber is bolted to the frame and the swing arm. The wheel is bolted in the swing arm. As you lift the bike the wheel will stay on the ground and the bike will raise up until the suspension is fully extended and then the wheel will leave the ground.

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding the Progressive 412 Series Shocks For Harley. With those shocks, if you are truly riding with a passenger about 50% of the time then the Heavy-Duty springs would be the way we would suggest you want to go. The standard duty spring is going to be meant for riders who are under 250lbs and riding by themselves most of the time. That being said, if you feel like you would like to have the standard-duty shock over the heavy-duty shock we have no problem authorizing a return for the kit you have to get you the right shocks.

I bet that 250lbs requires the preload on the spring to be wound up pretty tight. I bet there is also some overlap on the springs that could do with an explanation.

Hoping for a few more thought on the SD vs HD before I either return or install. Thanks.

Edit- Just got off phone with progressive and they said def SD for me.

I have 412's on my '07 Custom. I installed them myself, but that was several years ago. I don't recall it being a difficult job, and I did the upgrade at the same time I had to change the rear tire. Definitely a better ride.

Just recently did 412s on my bike, not too bad of an install, but you will need a low profile jack or motorcycle jack. Without one, the rear fender will fall on the rear tire. Also, make sure that the bolts are aligned to the frame, you may have to lower or raise the jack a little bit to get it lined up. Mine was not completely lined up, and long story short i had to chase the threads out from the other side to fix it.
