21" vs 19" Wheel

Default 21" vs 19" Wheel

Thinking of swapping out my 21" front wheel for a 19". The primary reason is to run a wider tire. Does anybody notice a better ride out of a 19?

I prefer the 19" wheel myself. I think the tire selection os much better, and I think a wider tire rides much better.

Changed my 21" for a 19" 13 spoke cast off a Dyna. Love it.
With the 21", you are soon off the edge of the tyre. Plus, a better available selection of rubber. You will probably want to lower the fender an inch though to make it look right.

did you have to change much out going to a mag? I’m guessing bearings, at least?

Bearings should be the same withing the same years. I removed the mag wheels on my 2018 and sold them, then bought front and rear spoke wheel hubs from a 2012 Nightster, same bearings and spacers as the 2018.

Yes, changed bearings and inner spacer as the Dyna bearings were either 1" or 25mm, (can't remember which) and my spindle was 3/4"

I have a rear spoke sitting in the garage a guy gave me for cheap (I have the full mag on the rear now). Now just debating on whether I want to go with the mag setup or spoke front and rear.

If you are contemplating between spoke and cast, I would go with cast as you can run without tube and repair your tire if it goes flat on the side of the road. For spokes, you should always run tube and if you go flat on the road, game over. I had tires go flat overnight with spokes.because I did not run a tube although the manufacturer said wheels were tubeless. For me, I went from 19" cast to 21" fat spoke...a personal preference. Spokes IMO look better but you need to maintain to keep in nice.. Ride was fine and not much different from the 19 cast for me anyway but I am a cruiser not an aggressive rider. Just had to buy a narrower tire to fit my stock fender although I replaced the fender later.

I’m a dirt bike guy so I’m a little biased towards the spokes. But like you said, they require a bit more attention. I think I could go either way as I think they both look really good. It’ll probably just depend on what I stumbled on first.

That 21” cast looks really good!
