Speedometer Reset Push Button Failure / Broken

Will the speedo fail to show mileage and not record speed ?

Although the back light is on.

Looking the wire diagram, it shows the ground circuit shear the ground .

It is a simple replacement, which I will do.

Just want to understand the failure.

 

It's a momentary switch that occasionally fails to make contact within. Yes it is an easy replacement. In the meantime everything will function as normal, with the exception of cycling through odometer/trip meter/reset trip meter.

Thanks for the reply......Had to ask....I am thinking there is a ground broken some where.

Would be nice that the wire diagrams call out wire color and tracers, with letters.

I just went thru a ground disconnect , at the main stud at the motor mount stud. There were two eyelet fatigued and broke off. ( repaired )

I have a Clymer Shop manual, not very well defined diagrams.

To determine if the switch is faulty, check for continuity between the two switch leads while holding the button down.

 

The switch housing is broken in two. Guts hanging out, like road kill.....The switch is only 7$ on Amazon.... Have the new one Wed,

 

Word from the wise, while the Clymer manuals will get you through the basics, nothing beats the OEM Service Manual specific to your model. You will find detailed wiring diagrams, including color codes within.

 

Finding a fair price for a Harley manual is, damn next to impossible ! .... It would be nice to have set.

 

The wires on the switch might be black but that doesn't mean they are ground.

This from a 2008 bike shows the connections to the speedo.

Ok found fair priced 2002 Manuals Electrical Diagnostic Manual Sportster

What is the difference between these Manual..... # 99495-02 and # 99495-03 ? 03 just has the latest up dates / revisions ?

Is it just the print date.

No idea. I have a 2008 but was hoping for you that the speedo wiring hasn't changed between the years.
