I've changed to synthetic on an Ironhead with no rebuild. Change whenever you want. If the engine is tight you'll have no leaks. If it was going to leak anyway, syn may help you find it sooner. Syn does not cause leaks in any way shape or form.
4000 miles is hardly broken-in.

Another thing, the Synthetic has smaller Molecular structure, therefore it tends to leak from places where no leak was seen before. Another reason it lubes better.
Welcome to HDF Lee, real glad to see you here.

RE: oil ?
Thank you cHarley and ****** for the explanation on why you can get leaks when changing to synthetic oil. I know this from my own experience after I changed oils on a car I owned. I thought I would get the benefits of putting some in an older vintage Porsche I have. I wasadvised not to do this by others wiser than me. Sure enough, after a period of time, that sucker began to leak like a sieve. Changed back to dino type but, she still leaks in places that it never did before. The reasons are clearly put by cHarley. I had around 70,000 miles on the engine at the time and, thought that it was fairly clean. That is why I suggested to start using synthetic in an engines early stages of life.
