08 Sporster Red Key Light

Is the key light solid? Do your turn signals flash alternately when this happens?
Since your bike starts and runs and your key light turns on, try checking your diagnostic trouble codes.

If your TS flashes alternately when your key light comes on, try replacing your fob battery.

Thanks for the response. To answer you, No the turn signals don't blink. The light is solid. It is weird. Sometimes it does and sometime doesn't. Random as hell. Sometimes it will just go off and stay off. The Fob battery is fairly new, but that is my first thing to try. Once again thanks. Also, thanks for the link to diag. code check.

2007-2010 models have a problem with corrosion in the fuse box that causes all kinds of electrical gremlins, mine was doing odd things until I pulled all the fuses and the two black relays and found a lot of corrosion so I cleaned the fuse & relay sockets where the fuses push in with an emery board and put new fuses in with dielectric grease. Been fine for years since I did that, might be worth a try.

Timmy, that is not the code. That is the Part Number. The code would have shown just before that pn number. I think I figured out mine. I had put LED bulbs in a while back. The code I am getting is both rear turn signals. Except they both blink. But since I put in LEDs they blink fine for the first 4 blinks, then they blink real fast. Put regular bulbs back in and they blink fine and no key light. I have to get the little resister thing to wire in. Hopefully this gives you a direction to go. Thanks. Old Hippy

Cheers. I figured mine out, too. I was not getting a code when I posted that above but did afterwards (strange). B2161 for the rear LED brake light I installed last year. I don't know why but I guess the bike had issue with it recently because there never was a code and the security light never came on before. Anyways, a guy in my riding club is a Harley tech and he said I needed to start the bike, run the 4-way flashers for about 60 seconds while pressing both brakes numerous times, much like you do to get rid of hyper flash. It worked. Red light hasn't come on since. Good luck with yours.
