Could also be that he or a PO has ridden with a passenger and an easy way to do that is with a Sundowner or similar.

It also had forward controls but I think I will go to mid controls. I am much more comfortable with those. Looking at it it looks like I just need to relocate shifter and peg and need a shorter rod for brake once it is relocated?

anything else?

Well I put about 80 miles on it today and am getting more used to the forward controls. Not gona make a snap decision yet.

The ONE thing that is wrong is the gas cap rattles. Screws in and clicks normal when tight but the too cap. Flops and rattles. Is there a fix for this or needs a new cap?

The XR1200X is arguably the most competent version. They quit making them about five years ago- you should have no trouble finding a used one in your price range.

Old thread, but thought I ought to bring it back to mention something. XRX I bought an XL1200L but except for the bags I added, I believe you were right about the ergos. I changed to mids, and would like a little more road height, ie ground clearance. I would have also changed the seat/fender but would have a more capable bike otherwise.

Did not think so but maybe more like the 1200R with mid controls. Ah well, this will be mine when done. Will just have to SETTLE for a little less capability. No regrets really, as those would have been a lot harder to find and afford.

I too have a 2007 XL1200L. I put the rear shocks of a 1200R on it at the back and in front, I put the damper rods of a 1200R. That gave my L the clearance of the R. That done, I honestly don't think there's less capability now.

BTW my L came with mids.

How long are those rear shocks? My factory ones are 12" and I would like 13".

The factory shocks I got from a 2007 1200R work for me because I am not too heavy (150lbs). With no load on them, their length is 13.25" eye to eye. They only have 3 settings for adjusting preload, unlike the shocks of the 1200L that have 5 settings. When I ride solo, I set the preload to the middle notch. When I ride with the wife (another 100lbs) then I set it to the stiffest notch. With the wife as pillion, we occasionally bottom out when riding into large potholes.

HTH.

Ok thanks. Length sounds good but not strength. I weigh 180 by myself, and 2 up would be too much. Guess am gonna end up ponying up some serious cash for shocks.
