Oil light prior to starting the bike
My nightster oil light goes on when i put in my keys and turn on the "RUN" switch. Once i hit the start button it goes off. Is this normal? Or do i need oil? I've only got 50 miles on my new bike...checked the oil the other day and it looked very light in terms of color. thanks.

RE: Oil light prior to starting the bike
My only experience is withan 07XL 1200L rental that I put 330 miles on in a day. My "briefing" by the dealership on operating procedures included, "Turn the ignition, let the indicator lights come on and the diagnostic test run, wait for the lights to go out, then start it." So my answer would have to be yes, it's normal. If it comes on after you start it, then it may mean something else. BTW, check your oil anyway. Good habit to get into that I don't have yet. Same with tire pressure.
Someone that actually knows what they are talking about will be along shortly, though.

RE: Oil light prior to starting the bike
Let me briefly explain how oil pressure light works, when the engine is off, the oil pressure is none because the oil pump does not turn. When you crank the motor, the oil pump starts spinning and primes the oil gallery, when the oil pressure gets to the spec, the pressure switch will be disconnected off the ground and turn off the oil light. This is a safety light to remind you when the oil pressure is low, you still have to check the oil level regularly. Later Alex
