Default Rebuilding an Ironhead Crank

Here's a few pics from the rebuild process doing my 72CH crankshaft:

.007" crank runout. Even in bearings, totally unacceptable.

Cases split.

Run through the parts washer. Cleaned up cases. Absolutely need clean parts.

Using my jig to split the crank. Jig drawings available. Should fit any 1000cc XL crank.

Crank split. Jig up top. Manuals top right (even pros use manuals). Crank parts bottom. Old rollers/cages bagged.

Balance sheet. Courtesy of S&S. Everything weighed and accounted for.

Checking balance. Shooting for 60% on an ironhead XL. Came out to 60.1% so no need for modification.

Old flywheel washers (before balancing).

Replaced with new flywheel washers.

New LH bearing race installed.

Assembling crankpin flywheels. Nothing torqued down at this point.

Using my truing jig to true the crank. End result <.001" runout at bearing surfaces between centers. Details on jig available.

Crank installed and cases together. Ready to move on to the next step.

Wow very impressive....how nice to have the equipment you need at your disposal.

Very few professionals have the knowledge on these old bikes. And finding parts is another matter unless you are okay with aftermarket and not staying factory original.

The dealership in my area has refused to take ironheads/shovelheads even to replace a tire. So owners like me need to learn as much as I can to even maintain my bikes.
