Default How much force to remove this fork cap?

How much force is ~usually~ required to remove this cap on the slider? I've tried prying up with a flathead screwdriver in the slot in back...no joy. While the wheel is off, I have better access if I should use a punch and tap it out. I just don't want to wreck it. Thanks for any insights.

Seal is leaking slightly. I have a motionpro tool to clean out the dirt.

My FSM just says to "remove covers" so I'd imagine just a good pop with a punch should break them free.

I've had to use a punch a few times. On some REAAAAAAAAAALLY bad ones I've had to break out the torch and BFH to go at them.

LOL. I think I'll leave it weep for a while if a punch doesn't work right now. front end is being rebuilt over the winter and I could easily replace that cap if I wreck it then.

Thanks for the hint though. Appreciated.

Yeah, those can be some bad mamma jammas. Mine didn't come off too easily. If I hadn't been careful, I would have buggered up the whole section where you insert the punch. The metal is soft and will get thrashed if you're not careful. A 1/4" or 1/8" punch with LIGHT taps should do the trick! Once you get it up a little, you can use a flat blade to start prying up and working your way around.

Mine would not move trying to twist off with a flat blade screwdriver, so i used a brass drift and it came off easy after a couple of light taps with a hammer.

Maybe squirt a little penetrating oil along the seam, let it soak in. Might loosen up any corrosion that might make the cover stick.

Many thanks, gentlemen.

It came up with a couple good taps on a drift (in the pry slot) with a hammer. Only way to do it without risking scratching other parts is to remove the tire and fender and hang the caliper up out of the way.

This cursed nameless thing is gonna end up tossed. Won't go back down now.

Tried tapping from the top with a small piece of wood (so not to scratch anything). It goes down crooked. As it is in the picture, it won't move, not going anywhere but it's not right. is there a secret method to it? I cleaned inside the cap and also cleaned the dust seal it sits on. Just won't sit down further. I apologize for cluttering the forum with a trivial problem but I'm kind of admitting defeat on this one.
