Rear brake mod - 2014+ on an 07
My 07 has a single piston "push and scrape" rear calliper that feels like wood and leaves a lot to be desired in the performance department. I primarily use my front brakes, but a good rear brake is desirable when one needs it - panic stops, trail braking into corners, hairpin turns.........With the Touring Brembos on the front, the rear now needed an upgrade
The trick is a good, but not too good rear brake as the majority of braking is done on the front and a powerful rear brake is not desirable.
Figuring that the factory Engineers had thought of this, I went looking at the new Sportster "improved" braking system. The +14 Sportsters use a 2 sided calliper, and smaller diameter rotor. Presumably the better calliper allows a smaller diameter rotor, foregoing the longer lever arm provided by the stock rotor. Note that the new rotor is 1mm thicker. Interestingly this is the same rotor as the XR1200
The swingarm is the same for old and new. A parts comparison shows that aside from the wheel and calliper bracket, the only different part on the wheel spacing fitment up is the L spacer.
Axle diameter changed from 1 inch to 25mm, but this is a simple matter of opening up the spacer and calliper bracket with a sanding drum. Tolerance is not critical.
This made me confident enough to go and buy:
2017 rear calliper (found a new take off!!)
Bracket to suit
L spacer 41241-08
2 ea. Calliper mounting bolts 44160-00
Rotor 41833-08 (another new take off!!)
A bit of a setback when I fitted it all up and found that the rotor was not centred in the calliper. A quick trip to the machine shop to spot face the calliper bracket 1mm solved the problem, and all is well.
Now that it all fits, stainless lines are in order. The banjo bolt and line length is compatible, so a stock 07 SS line kit will work.
I do not know if the two MC have the same bore and stroke, and a test ride awaits to see how it all works

The rear rotor was an XR1200 that the guy changed out for chrome. Form over function...................

My Brembos came to me by the same route! We have to be grateful to some folk I suppose!
