mystery: flipped out speedo
Hi -
Does anyone know why a speedo would flip – randomly?
When I start my ride, the speedo is usually ok.
However, if I stop and then restart the bike, the speedo needle with flip full circle and then dangle like a limp noodle. If I turn the bike off and restart it – most[/i] times the speedo’s needle will reset itself – but what the heck is happening here? Is this typical of 883 sportys?

RE: mystery: flipped out speedo
I think this is related to the voltage regulator. When I brought my '07 in for the volatage regulator relocation recall (which they couldn't do because of my engine guard - they need another part!), my speedo died on the way home. I drove it back, and it cured itself on a restart. They had attempted to relocate something relating to the recall, then restored it - this was the only time I had the problem. I'm bringing the bike back to actually do the recall work later this summer, so we'll see if it happens again.

RE: mystery: flipped out speedo
my speedo lately has been screwing up. Turn the bike on, no reading. Start the bike, then the reading comes up. This morning. I turned the bike on, started it up and no digital reading came up at all. I turned the bike off, turned it back on and the digital reading finally came up. This keeps getting worse and worse, im sure it will stop alltogether soon. Not sure how to fix it.

RE: mystery: flipped out speedo
This has been an on going issue. Bad ground or PCM issue. If the PCM looses part of it's programming, it will freek. I have the problem that the bike looses power for a split second after riding for more than 30 seconds. This is a ground issue and can't pinpoint the source. I don't think Harley mechanics are trained enough to deal with this issue yet.

Dallastx - My '07 1200R (3700mi) does the same thing. Like clockwork every morning I get half way down my street and the engine hiccups once. After the hiccup, it runs perfect all day long. A mechanic friend said that he thinks the computer is changing modes from cold engine to warm engine but I'm not so sure. In any case, you're not alone with that issue.
HDWILLOW - I have also had a speedo issue. It's done it twice. Riding along about 30-40 the speedo suddenly drops to below zero for about five seconds. Just about the time I get finished saying WTF!! it pops back up and works normally. I called my dealer and described the speedo problem and they said they have never heard of this happening and they don't know what it is.
If anybody figures out the computer gliches, let us know.
