I bought a sportster, a 2007 Low, a while back to go with my '17 Fatboy S. Buddy of mine who has a touring bike mocked me for riding the sportster. Last year, I bought another sportster, a 2012 1200C, and sold the first sportster - to my buddy with the Ultra! Now, he rides the sportster about 90 percent of the time. We laugh about it now.
Thats VERY telling isn't it? Not knocking the BTs they're great for touring long distances in a straight line at 77mph...but city riding (which is all I do) they're exhausting to lug around.

I’ve owned several street bikes, sport bikes adventure bikes Harley tourers, a dyna and some vintage stuff.
I like my sportster for around town and coffee runs. I’ve owned 2, both 1200 and both efi. No experience with the older carb bikes. Never had any issues.
Ultimately I find them to be a fun, loud, tractor engine bike that rev limits way too early. I wish they had more power and higher rev limit but who doesn’t.
I take it to work once in awhile about 45-60 min ride which is about all I can take. I would never waste my time on a 883. Get one with a bigger tank unless you like to stop for gas every 80 miles.
