So I recently bought a 02 sporster. The carb has been taken apart and the jets have been cleaned. But it needs to be adjusted. I set the idle speed at 1000 and have tried to set it to where I thought it wasn't too rich or lean. But whenever I try and get on the throttle hard it acts really sluggish and backfires. Any tips on tuning?.... trying to get the bike on the road.

 

Accelerator pump working properly? What size motor, jet sizes, air cleaner, pipes, etc?

Yes, what he said, it sounds like the accelerator pump isn't working, or maybe your pilot jet is too rich. More info ?

 

Agree with checking the accelerator pump first.
