Default Sportster headlight issue

Hi All!

I recently inherited my fathers 06 XL1200C. The headlight does not work on low beam. I pulled the bulb to check it and found that the socket that plugs into the bulb is melted...

obviously I need to replace that plug but I wanted to check the power for high and low beam to make sure that was intact. Using my dvom (multimeter) I got 12v between yellow and black with the low beam switch on. If I flick the switch to high beam I lose the 12v. I would expect to find that 12 V had moved to the tan wire. It shows nothing.... anyone have ideas?

Agreed. But I’ve looked for continuity to ground on the hot side... saw none. I had the switch Addy apart and all that looked good. I really don’t want to tear it down to the wire harness but may have to I guess. I was hoping someone would say “ that always happens, look at XYZ.” But no luck! Haha

On my 06 only the high beam element in the bulb is powered when I switch on the high beams. I found that out when I installed auxiliary lights shortly after I bought it and the instructions had me splice into the low beam wire. Consequently my aux lights only work on low beam

when you get a chance, pick up the HD factory service manual. they are worth their weight in gold. im on an 06 XL1200C as well, that manual and this forum have saved my booty on several occasions

Burned/melted headlight bulb sockets is very often caused by the owner installing a higher than stock wattage bulb.

The stock bulb is an H4 60/55w, often replaced by an owner with a 110/100w bulb which exceeds the design wattage specs for the socket & wiring and this is often the result.
