Battery problems on the XR1200
Hi everybody
Just sign in to check what this is, and maybe get some help with the XR 1200..
After replacing the battery and the handlebar, wiring inside was disconnected in the connectors under the tank, the bike wont start. There is no spark when i crank the engine, but when i release the button one spark appears shortly.
I replaced the original battery with a Varta YTX14L-BS ( 12V 1AH 200A )
After replacing it i was told that this battery have less capacity than the original. Can this cause the missing spark, even though the engine turns "normally"
I really would appreciate some help.

I'd say it's more likely something to do with the wiring work you did.
To be sure it's not the lower rated battery hook booster cables to a good 12 volt battery (if it's still in the car don't have the car running) and try to start it, if it starts immediately disconnect the booster cable so the bike doesn't try to charge both batteries, this will tell you if it is too weak of a battery to run the starter and coil at the same time.
If it does the same thing with the booster cables hooked up then start retracing your wiring work to locate the problem.
Also if the plugs you undid under the tank are the "pin" type make sure one or more of the pins didn't push back in the connector when you reconnected them.

Do you have any codes?

Did you have both spark plugs out when checking for spark?
The ECU will not fire the plugs unless it detects compression (Slowing of the rotation of the crank)
The ECM uses crankshaft compression slow down events to determine engine phase. Therefore, the spark plugs must be installed when checking for spark.
You get a spark when you release the starter because the ECU detects the crank slowing down.
Put both plugs in and connect an extra plug to the wire to check for spark.
