Reserve Light

Reserve Light
On my 2017 883 Super Low I am supposed to have a 4.5 Gallon Tank correct? I hit about 140 miles and the light came on. I know the dealer didn't fill me full full when I took delivery but it shocked me even more when it only took 3 gallons to fill the tank to what I call full. (bottom of the filler neck). What also surprised me as I've seen this on other Harleys and I see no mention of it in the owners manual, I guess they did away with the Low Fuel mile Counter, or count down. So is the tank actually 4.5 Gallons or when does the light supposed to come on?? I thought it would of come on with about a gallon left. just trying to figure my total range so they say I should get 50 MPG so I should easily get over 200 miles to a take and still have some for a where does this road go side trip. What are others getting on the newere 883s for mileage?

I believe you're correct, the light is supposed to come on with around 1 gallon left. Mine seems to come on with more than 1 gallon left. Keep in mind you're never going to totally drain the tank before the bike will quit. I would guess there might be around .5 gallon left. Just guessing though.
As far as mpg, with summer blended gasoline I can get around 58 mpg or so, winter blended gasoline drops that to low/mid 50's.

Yes the 883 L has a 4.5 gallon tank and the light should come on with about 1.0 gallon left.
I have a XL 1200 C with a 4.5 gallon tank, I average 141.5 miles before the light comes on and it takes about 3 gallons to fill to the bottom of the filler neck if I stop soon after the light comes on. The farthest I have gone before the light came on is 185 miles. The most I have put in to fill the tank is a little over 3.5 gallons, that has been at around 30 miles after the light came on.
My overall average MPG is at 48.3 mpg (over 5 years), last year it was 52 mpg overall.

Another SuperLow here. All your light does is alert you to having used up most of your gas. It is a simple matter to fill up and note your mileage, or set your trip, to keep track of your mileage. We all have to do something like that! You already know that when yours comes on you still have around 1.5 gallons left, which enables you to plan when to actually refuel. If you're riding locally and know exactly where your local filling stations are, you can plan to be almost empty as you stop next to a pump. If you're on unknown roads, you know you have to keep your eyes peeled. It ain't difficult. In the days when we had gas taps with a reserve position we had to scramble under the tank, as the engine stuttered, fumbling to get the tap open - and stop to refuel pretty soon after. Life's much easier the way we have it now.
Get to know your bike - ride on and enjoy!

Thanks guys after the nightmare that plagued me with the 750, I am glad to hear its normal for it to come on early, I totally plan on pushing this tank as far as I can after i hit 200 miles than see how much fuel it takes. 200 is my goal to make one ride I plan a lot easier. My Boulevard was always dead on 1 Gallon left when it came on and flashed, and exactly 1/4 gallon left when it went solid. more fun stuff to figure out when you get a new bike.
