Angry Sportster pipes

I need some advise; I got a 08 XL1200 I bought used. It has some after market slip ons I'm thinking are Rush (not sure). I got 48 mpg when I first got it, but it ran kind of crappy, sputtrering at some rpms. Now I'm a senior citizen and very frugal, so I didn't want to spend hundreds at the dealer for a dyna tune, if that's what its called. So following some advise from this forum I got a Fuel Moto Micro EFI Tuner. The bike runs a little better, but the mpg dropped to 35. So my question is, if I get a set of OEM mufflers, and get rid of the tuner and return everything to stock, will it once again run like stock and get the mpg back up where it belongs?

There's no reason you can't get at least 45mpg with a properly tuned bike. Slipons and upgraded aircleaner make the bike breathe better. I get 50MPG all day long on my 883 with SE aircleaner, SE mufflers, and bigger jetting (42/160 to 45/180). You just don't have it dialed in correctly yet. Nothing wrong with Rush slipons either, good quality pipes. What do your spark plugs look like at 35mpg? Chances are they are dark.

Also, think about changing your intake manifold seals, they are at least 10 years old. Sputtering could easily be signalling a vacuum leak. They are cheap, and easy to change by yourself! That will eliminate the chances of vacuum leaks causing a problem with EFI metering. Then you have a solid baseline to go from. Don't waste the money you spent on your tuner until you give it a fair chance. Remember, you are frugal.

Chances are there are no baffles in those mufflers! Go to stock or some aftermarket slip-on with baffles in it to give you that back pressure that you need. I would drop the tuner and just go with a High Flow Air Intake and Stage 1 Download. The bike will breathe better and with the proper back pressure, theres no reason why it shouldnt run better than stock and a lot better than its running now.
No need to get it dyno, no need to get any kind of Fuel Pack or Tuner or any of that nonsens if all you want is for decent mileage and a smooth running bike.

Check out the Thunder Torque Inserts™.

Here's a video of the DK 48 w/ stock exhaust modified with these-

They will deepen the tone of your exhaust a bit, giving it a throatier rumble/growl while also giving you a gain in low and mid range torque-

Here's a LINK to the TTIs.

Hope this helps!

Not a stupid question at all!

It all comes down to the inside diameter of your exhaust, whether or not you have baffles, that type of thing.

Here's a LINK fully explaining how to chose the right size for your exhaust.

In that link, you will find these pics with good info explaining more in depth-

Example of a TTI too small for the opening:

Example of a TTI that's just the right size for the most optimal results:

aha! thank you. so I just gotta figure out what the diameter of my pipes is. running full drags, no baffles. not going to be good lol, but i've been unsure as to what, exactly, i was going to put in/on 'em to quiet the shrill and gain my power back.

Appreciated!

+1 on the TTIs. I'm running stock mufflers with baffles removed and TTI118s and they sound great with good low end torque.
Great customer service and fast shipping with DK Customs.

Sweet! Thanks. I'd seen these before (think I ran into someone installing them on youtube) but now that it's closer to engine fire, it's just about time to think seriously about this stuff, haha.
