Default Oily Carb, Air Filter and Breather Bolts

2005 Sportster 883L - Stock CV Carb - I dont believe the air filter is stock, but it came on the bike.


Hey Guys - Took off air cleaner and carb is black and oily. Air filter is black and smells strongly if oil. Breather Bolts also super oily. Used Carb Cleaner to clean out carb, and ran it for a couple weeks.













Opened again tonight and same thing. Is this normal? Cant be.

Also there is this tube hanging from the bottom of the stock CV carb, and I read in these forums that this was supposed to go into the stock California air filter, which this is not - so I drilled a hole and ran it in. Thoughts? Is that ok, or am I filling this thing with black shitty oil?













Im a newb when it comes to this stuff, so please excuse me.

you need to get an aftermarket intake that doesnt vent the crank case into the air intake, like a DK custom intake with external breathers

The bike has probably been over filled on oil a little bit or ridden hard a lot and you're getting oil spitting out of the breathers into the air box making your air filter nasty and everything down wind of it, like the carb, intake valves and pistons. Pretty much a factory flaw design to have the crank case vented into the air intake like they do. these bikes spit a little oil out of the breathers no matter what, so best thing to do is get some sort of external breather system on it.

I can totally understand the external breather thought. Can I just use external breather bolts? Just get some oil on the pants?

Will this clear up as I take care of all of that? If ridden hard ( I do ring her out ), does it just spit more oil because Im pushing it hard?

Also what should I do about that carb overflow line at the bottom of the carb? Makes sense that people would put it back into the intake. Just put the gas back where its going in - but if I upgrade the air cleaner, what should I do with this tube? I really dont want it hanging there, and dont want to extend the line and run it into the frame. Trying to get that super clean look. Is a new carb in order?

From my limited experience, this tube should be routed to the ground. I believe the idea with this overflow tube is to send excess fuel out when there is an issue with the float being stuck. I'd think routing it to the air cleaner/intake would cause issues with running, since it'd be adding more fuel than necessary at any given throttle position.

Mine is routed behind the rear push rod tubes, behind the belt gear cover and to the ground.

What you are experiencing is known as blow by. The most common cause of this is the engine oil level being too high. Often times, lowering the oil level still isn't enough to make the blow by manageable.

This excessive oily mess, as well as other negative effects, can be resolved with an External Breather System.

Take a look at these photos-




With an EBS, your bike will run better since engines like cool, clean air. And you will increase engine longevity.

You can upgrade the entire A/C system that would include a bolt on EBS.

Here's a pic of our Transparent 587 A/C System with our Breather Bolts, they offer a very clean look-



You could use this system with your existing OEM air cleaner.

I deal with the external breather bolts and a little oil on the pants/exhaust pipes. Its manageable and i could feel the improvement in performance off the bat.

External system is the way to go IMHO.

Here's a pic of my old system used with Arlen Ness intake





New setup (not completed yet) to be used with a velocity stack






Both are routed to a 'catch can' (kart racing application) then
to atmosphere.
