90% of these problems end up that the battery was toast, sometimes they seem to be charged but don't have the power when under heavy load frm the starter.
Check your battery wire connections both at the battery and at the frame ground and starter, if they are clean and corrosion free then put a new battery in it.

Welcome to the forum.
There's enough goldtone eagles on that thing to make a room full of Navy Admirals jealous.
Start with the obvious: test the battery connections and other connections, test the battery, dry the damn bike off (could be that simple, indicating a potential short in wiring somewhere), go on to the relay, starter switch, and finally starter itself.
Got a factory service manual?
Also, as has been said above, don't ratchet a tie off around the wiring harness. :P

And once you install that new battery, make sure the electrical system is charging. With bike running should be reading about 14 volts at the battery and will fluctuate as the revs increase and decrease. If volts remain flat / steady, you likely have a bad voltage regulator ... common problem on Sportsters. And please buy yourself a manual if you do not have one.
