They make 'em big over here....number plates (licence plates?) that is. 8 1/2" x 7 1/2" is the supplied size, I've got 7" x 5" on mine and it's illegal...but not so much that the cops would pull me for it.
On the leather question...leather trousers with laces up the side on blokes..mmmmmm! However, anything's better than the multi-coloured, one-piece, knee-slider, speed-hump monstrosities that the crotch-rocket boys in the UK wear. Just my $0.02 my thoughts are worth in the USA.

Leather Chaps and Jacket for mid 40's and below.
Coldest riding temp...19. Chaps were NECESSARY! So was the balaclava and modular full face helmet! Frost bite and hypothermia aren't to betrifled with, even if the solution "looks gay".
Decent weather...Jeans and Nylon mesh jacket. Olympia mesh gloves majority of the time. Sometimes bare-fisted. HJC 3/4 helmet always.

I wear the fingerless gloves to keep my hands from sweating on the grips.

You can argue all you want. Chaps = Gay. Thermals work just as well. I can ski in -20 degrees in jeans and thermals but not ride on a cycle at 40 degrees? Chaps are a gay biker thing - only place that wears it. Lots of other people wear hats, leather jackets, denim, etc. It's only chaps that are worn by gays and bikers.
