Default Seat interchangeability - Help, please

I just bought a 2008 XL1200R, and want to replace the Drag Specialties two-up seat. Online, I see seats that say they will only fit '04-05, or '07-10, and some that say they will fit all from '04-'17.

I know that somewhere around '10, the ECM module was moved from the left side to the top, but I don't know how that affects seat compatibility. I am looking specifically at a Sportster "Tall Boy" solo seat from Harley. Harley says this seat is only for '10-'18 models. Are they interchangeable, or can they be (easily) made to fit my 2008?

Thanks

The ECM under the seat effects fitment. You can relocate the ECM to the battery compartment easily if you get a smaller lithium ion battery.

Im thinking on Spurtstir 86-03 is interchangeable, then 04-06, then 07-10 like staed, they arent one size fits all...then there is the 3.3 and 4.5 gallon tank which effecte seat length. The 3.3 seat is longer.

Default Seat interchangeability

Thanks, all.

My 2008 has the module on the left side, not under the seat. I want to know how this affects replacing it with a seat that has the module under the seat.

You're fine. The 2010+ just doesn't have a cut out in the seat pan for the ECU. If your ECU is no longer under your seat, you can buy 2010+ model seats. Same mount seat up.

'07 - '09's have the ECM mounted in the fender under the seat. '10 and up have the module mounted behind the rear cylinder.

Take the LePera Bare Bone for example...

The '07 - '09 would look like this:

The '10 and up would look like this:

The back on the '07-'09's covers the ECM.

Don't know of any reason that an '07-'09 seat can't be used on the '10's and above. The opposite direction not some much - unless an ECM relocation was done and the hole in the fender was dealt with (cover, replacement fenders, or whatever).

Have you checked at your local dealer for a "loaner" Tall Boy seat?

Many dealers have seats they loan out.
My dealer only requires a copy of your drivers license to take a loaner seat for a day.

My dealer is pretty much a "Boutique," and this is not likely, but a good suggestion, and I will follow up. Thanks.
