Switching to reserve sure beats pushing the scoot down the road. No mater how much chrome you have, it don't look cool pushing.
You need to practice switching from on / res while running. should take <2 sec (find choke, little forward & up twist 180 deg, ahhhh that's better,) - you might not have a safe place to pull over.

I did that two Oregon trips ago... Filled up in Eugene and started to sputter on the California side of the Siskiyou Pass (downhill side). Leaned over to switch into reserve, and son of a gun!!, I was already there! Coasted down to the CHP inspection facility, asked for a ride to the nearest station, was turned down AND told I couldn't leave my bike there! So I started pushing on the shoulder of I-5 (very busy, very windy). Got about 3/4 mile when a fellow rider who was in his car stopped and gave me a lift to the station two exits away and brought me back. I offered him 20 bucks but he refused. One hell of a guy!
