Default Why Don't People Wear a Helmet?

I rolled up on a terrible site yesterday. From what I heard, a Street Glide turned on a green light and didn't see the pickup coming from the other direction. While any hit is bad, this one was not at a high rate of speed. Estimates say the truck slowed down to around 10-15mph before impact. There is no question of fault in this accident.

The sad part is while the rider would have suffered some broken bones, scrapes and bruises, it is likely he would have been able to recover. However, this rider decided it was more cool to ride without a helmet. His head bounced on the pavement a couple of times after the impact. While he is still alive for now, his future is very questionable.

I just don't understand why people ride without a helmet. I don't care if i don't look super cool when I ride, I look super cool when I'm alive walking around with my family...even with my dad body! Be careful out there!

Cool

I've ridden since before we got a helmet law and jokingly explained I always wore one to preserve my coiffure! Don't have much hair left these days, but still have my head.....

No freedom over here. A helmet is compulsory and needs to be safety approved!

It is very rare that I go out without a helmet, but when I do, it is not the look (I am old, overweight and balding.. not easy to look cool) it is the experience I like. I only do it on low traffic, back roads in park like settings. It is like hiking in the woods, but on a motorcycle!

The helmet I ware 90% if the time is a modular, I wear a 3/4 most of the rest.

Yeah, sorry. No option here in Missouri in the US either. But several states have it optional and I think thats a good thing.

Hi SgtThump, I too think it is indeed a good thing but without the choice mortality rate undoubtedly increases with motorcycle related accidents. That was the justification behind removing freedom of choice over here. Nevertheless I have jumped through hoops and spent significantly more than the retail cost of $165 over your side of the pond to get my hands on (or rather my noggin in) a Harley-Davidson Laxity Pro half helmet. After 40 odd years of motorcycling it was my first foray into half-helmets and I must say (whilst not legal in the UK it is undoubtedly better than the German tank commanders helmet a mate wears) I have found it is the most comfortable I have worn in the Summer for the ride I currently own. Winter time the FXRG modular will undoubtedly appear once again.
