I'm no mechanic but I would start by checking the primary chain tension and transmission fluid level. Just to be sure, you are giving it a pretty stout kick right? My bike will fight me going into first sometimes so I just roll a couple feet and then give it a good whack. If the primary chain and fluid level look good then I would try rolling in neutral for a while to see if you can free up anything that might be binding. Lastly, although not fun, I'm pretty sure we can start in 2nd gear. If the bike wont even move in second then I suspect it might be a more serious issue. Good luck and I hope you get back on the road soon!

Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF.

When a Harley stands still for a while, say overnight, the clutch plates stick together, thanks to the oil in the primary. Selecting first gear at the start of a ride requires a firm pressure on the lever, which should be rewarded by a loud 'clunk'! Then you're ready to start riding. So the reason you have difficulty getting first gear may simply be that you need to apply plenty of firm pressure on the lever.

If you engage second gear, to get the bike moving will require a lot of revs and care, while slipping the clutch to get the poor bike underway. Better to crack engaging first instead!

Tell us if there is more to this than the few words you opened with.
