Default Is this lifter noise?

Esteemed riders,

I'm hearing this clanking on the air cleaner side of my 07 XL1200L (stock engine).

Took it to the stealership who said it's most likely bad lifter and they will charge me $800-$1000 for the fix.

Seeking your valued opinion. Thank you.

Sounds like it. How many miles on the bike? Has anyone done any mods to it? If the dealer said it's a bad lifter perhaps you could replace them yourself

45+ k miles. The clanking comes and goes by the way. Bike is all stock except for a HD 30T transmission pulley instead of the regular 29T.

45k on a set of lifters? I won't argue but at least one sounds bad. I'd just replace them.

Seeing as it comes and goes I would try a seafoam treatment in the crankcase just in case it's just deposits in the lifter.

800 to replace a lifter(s) is gangster but, you are basically taking the heads off to do it if you have stock push rods and pushrod covers+ all the gaskets that go along with it. good time to add rockouts and switch to cometic gaskets.

would only cost you about 150-200 if you did it yourself. would you be willing to do that if we helped?

I don't recommend Seafoam in the crankcase of a Harley unless you are using an oil purge system. Crankcase treatment with Seafoam is intended to be done for a short duration and then drained, like right before you do an oil change.

The problem is that this application is intended for vehicles that "store" their oil in the crankcase which gets completely drained when changing oil. A Harley on the other hand stores the oil in a tank which is what gets drained. There's another 1/2 - 3/4 of a quart that remains behind in the motor when changing oil on a Harley, unless of course you use a purge system to completely flush the contents of the motor and oil system.

Seafoam is a solvent. Not something I would want in my oil for any length of time.

Errmmm... the first time ever that I heard the word "lifter", was yesterday when the stealership told me it was my lifters that was doing all that clanging and banging.

Now that you know that... do you still think it'd be wise for me to venture down that road?

Ok guys, don't laugh but I went online at http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....artsfinder.htm to look for lifters for my 07 XL1200L and I can't even find the part

What are they called in the parts catalog?

I thought I'd look at the online diagram to see where they are located. That would give me an idea of what's involved to replace them.

So... someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanx!
