What gear should I be in
#11
Like I said,...IMO.
My XS1100 1500 - 7500
CBR 1500 - 10k
Pre-unit Tri had no tach but I could easily put around at super low rpm with no lugging.
Dyna, wasn't paying much attention to tach but I KNOW I was able to get more out of each gear.
Sportster 2200-6ish. Anything more you're not creating power, unless you've done mods. Anything less you're lugging. For many,..even 2k is rough unless you have a great tune.
Now let's consider that with the Sporty you're only really driving in the 2500-4k range. Less you're prone to lugging, more you're motor seems like it's screaming.
Are there many bikes with a more narrow rpm range than that? Granted I've not driven them all so I could be wrong.

Fair enough,
the big twins have a more "narrow" rpm range overall vs the sporty evo
Stock big twins dump power early on and start to fizzle by 5k. Torque rush goes away early.
the stock sporty is usable across most of the 2-6.5k spread. OPs is a little different since it is older but, the w cams put out beyond 6k. The tune/rev limit are what kills it for some. The sporty likes high revs. The riders tend to not like reving up there though.

Right, if you were ripping through the gears the BT loses steam 1k rpms earlier than the Sporty. But for everyday cruising,....I'm thinking the BT gets a bit more use of each gear. I could very well be wrong as I only spent a little time on a BT. I just don't remember the BT being as temperamental in the lower rpm range and as angry in the upper rpm range.
I'm by no means saying the the Sporty is not a very capable get into 3rd/4th and rip all day cruiser. And I would certainly never trade for a Dyna.
But now we're comparing how high white men can jump...lol!

the stock twin cam just rolls at lower rpms overall. that's where the meat is.
sporty is a smaller engine will be busier, vibrate, and such. a chainsaw. the noise and vibes don't mean it's going to explode, that's just the nature of the sporty evo.
rev that b*t*h! the butt will say, "hey bro... there's more noise than giddyup, time to change gears."
i rode all over the place with no tach. the 2007s CN's/Standards didn't come with tachs or have the fancy, new fangled gear/rpm in the odo lcd. the butt and the limiter told me where to go. the tach came later.
before i upgraded, i was rarely ever riding anywhere near 4K. the bike didn't like it because of the pipes. (see older stuff [3+ months]here:https://www.youtube.com/user/cvaria4...view=0&sort=dd) love my sporty

I was referring to us comparing the sporty vs BT in that joke, not including the jap bikes which are of course different animals.
If ya have to explain a joke, it must be a sh*tty joke.
Sounds like we feel the same about our Sporties. I was just making the point that to a Sportster noob, it takes some getting used too. The tach simply expedites the confidence.
One of the reasons I sold my XS11 is because it was TOO easy to drive. Zero character. Its like you were gliding instead of riding. Not as much fun.
