Seriously? I'm not trying to poke fun or anything like that. I just don't get the point of wearing a vest. Is it for looks only or does it serve a real purpose?
Leather slides better than t-shirt material... And, it's a place to hold your cigarettes. Oh, and it's cooler in hot summer than a full leather jacket.
'Course I don't smoke cigarettes any more, nor do I wear a vest. I got a mesh jacket to try out this year.
I Think of a vest as being a light jacket , or as I do a lot , a light jacket a vest and long sleeve shirt -- peel some off as the day goes to warmer , I use denim
Abrasion resistance already mentioned. Depending on material, it adds some warm to the core. In the northeast, it is not uncommon to start an "Indian Summer" ride needing nothing but a long-sleeve T-shirt but seriously needing something more [an insulated vest] as soon as the sun goes down.

For me the utility of a vest is in keeping my under layered clothes tight to my chest. I only use a vest during spring and fall; they're a great way to keep the wind from penetrating to your chest.
But, even when I do wear a vest, you'll never see it. It's under an armored leather jacket. I vary my under layers depending on temperatures but never ride without armored leather; sweat washes off, road rash, not so much
Men been wearing vest all the way back to the old west. Cow boys wore them. Did they need a point. if you don't like them then by all means you are free to not wear one.
