Mine is not worn for sliding.
It is worn for extra core warmth
It is worn for carrying concealed.
It is handy for fob, keys and wallet, as I hate to sit on my wallet when riding.
I don't wear patches or pins, but I suppose if I did, they would be on my vest.
It takes up very little room on the bike if I take it off, yet offers a great core warmth when closed. It also holds looser clothing tighter, reducing the flapping or wind pillowing.
It makes me feel good, which by itself is enough. I wear fleece vests at work, canvas vests at play, fishing vests, trap shooting vests, upland bird hunting vests, why not a riding vest?
I guess for me, I don't understand your question. It is not mandatory that YOU wear one, but why does it bother you if others do?

For me, it's purpose driven. As others have stated...
But honestly, my first reason is the main reason. It's hot as ***** here in Florida and I would be drenched in sweat in 5 minutes if I wore a full leather jacket. A leather vest still provides torso protection while also being a less oven-like option. Safety sacrifice? Yes. But one I'm willing to take for a bit more comfort. Leather also protects way more than cotton, mesh, polyester. That stuff turns to dust when it skids across pavement.
- Protection - no, it's not as protective as a full leather jacket. But when you live in Florida heat and humidity, you make sacrifices...
- Concealed carry
- Pockets to carry things
- Makes me look a B.A.M.F.
- Gets the ladies all hot and bothered
- Makes me feel validated by other bikers
- Ok, I digress...

My denim vest has a holster built right into it. I wear it when its too hot for a jacket and to cold for a T shirt. Pockets hold my gun, cell , wallet and keys. Did i hear someone mention armor etc, etc. Sorry i dress for comfort more so than protection. Sorry there will always be people that think what they are wearing is going to save there *** in the event of a bad day because somebody else told them so. Vests are cool and functional.
