So the key (#8 in my previous post) is broken, not allowing the shaft to move the cam gears. Sounds like the problem to the solution.
Where did that broken key go and what's it look like? Any more pictures?
Also, is your oil pump worm gear working okay?

Check out how to align the cams when you go to reassemble. It's an easy process, but you have to get it just right.
Make sure you lube everything good when you reassemble. You don't need assembly lube on a setup that's already mated and broken it, just get it good and wet with new oil as you're putting it together.

The key broke half off, so the back gear or whatever it's called on the shaft spins, but the one in front behind the nut doesnt. I haven't taken it apart all the way yet, my son is sick so I'll do it hopefully tom or Wednesday and take pics. I'll update you when I replace it and let you know how it goes. Again, I've learned a lot from you, and you're knowledgeable without you id still be staring at it wondering. Thanks!

I think this article will be highly relevant to your issue: http://hammerperf.com/ttxlcaminstall.shtml#pinionnut
You're lucky on a 97 you can just replace the key and not be out an entire shaft. I also second very carefully checking the bottom end. If that key fell down it could end up in the oil pump.
