Default Runnin' Good In The Cold

Not sure if it's just me or maybe other's feel the same way but my Sporty seems to run better when it's colder out. Air temp was 51 here today, went for a little poke and it seemed as though my bike had better accleration and better top end. Anyone else notice a difference when it's a tad chilly out?

nearly all engines will run better when its cold outside. The air is more dense from the coldness and the denser and colder the incomming air the more power you will make.

Yep...all engines usually run better in the cold...especially if they are dependant on huge amounts of airflow such as a RamAir system. I would say an Air Cooled Harley would definitely run smoother in the cold....and probably feel a little faster. Sadly for me, Im in FL...Cold here is 70 :-(

I wish I could say the same. MIne is real finicky in the cold. I have to always keep messing with the choke, and it likes to fart out the carb, till it get fully warmed up, and takes a while when it's 45 deg. out side. Is it a carb adjustment I need to make??? I would love for my scoot to run better in the cold. . . .As a matter of fact, I better go outside to get her warmed up some, so I can leave for work. . . . [&o]

The extream cold like and bad engine performance like you are describing can't be avoided. When carb. engines are extreamly cold they run like ****, usualy because the intake manifold is so cold that the gas will condisate on it and cause the engine to run extreamly lean. If you live in a climate where you drive you bike out and its extreamly cold you should let it sit completely until it reaches normal operating temp, do not drive it and do not rev the engine up just let it idel until its warmed up. You could cause serius engine damage if you do due to the imporper fuel/air mixture and the cold will cause the oil to become very thick and could cause a low flow of oil to the engine. Thats the one thing I hate about the cold expecialy when it comes to riding a bike.

Well, I let run for a good couple min. this morning after I made the post, and rode it with 1/3 choke out, and I had no problems with it on the way to work. That little fart out the carb kinda brothers me though. But like said, there is prob. not too much I can do about it.

Mine does the same thing below 50 degrees out. The dealer said the stage one rejet will eliminate that and make the bike run like it should not how EPA wants it to run. I've found that to be true on about every carbureted bike I've owned in the last 20 years.

I ride in the cold here in VA all the time. I read my manual(no kidding I actually read it) it says below 60 full choke ride it for 2-3 min then half choke for 5 then push it all the way in. I have no problems with it coughing or spitting like i used to prior to reading the manual. the choke cycle is shorter when the temp goes up. Hope this helps.
