I adjusted my clutch (2007 XL1200L) last night and put back the cover when I noticed my torque wrench was not clicking anymore. Is that common? Now what, do I just throw it away and buy a new one? What do you guys do to keep yours from breaking?
The second I lose faith in a torque wrench, I would replace it.
If it's returnable do that. I have had OK luck with some cheapo wrenches, awful with others.
It depends on whether your talking about a sub $100 Harbor Freight/Sears wrench or a pro grade wrench like a Snap-On. You replace the cheapo and can have the better wrench serviced.
#1 rule in torque wrench life - always set it to 0 when you're done using it.
They are easy to service. The end cap of the handle pops off. there is a metal plug under it. It is a bismuth metal and can be melted with a good heat gun. melt it out. under that is a nut. adjust it till back in speck hint. most snap on trucks have a tester on them.
I just used my old needle style torque wrench last weekend, and using it again this weekend. I think they are still good as the new click style, from what I've heard. After 40 years of use, never had a problem with it. Plus, a good arm workout to hold the torque value, especially 110 pounds for my receiver hitch bolts, muy macho!
