Progressive 412 and 444 shocks: Can you really tell the difference?
#11
I sure could, once I got them dialed in correctly. Setting the sag correct is important.. There is a road I ride that has a hump in it. I cracked a vertebra in my back hitting it with the stock shocks. Never had a problem hitting it with the 444s. But that's just me. Your mileage could vary..

Did you check out all your options for the shocks on the PS site . To many guys go with a heavy spring rate from some catalog . When they should have gone with a different part # for a much better softer spring rate . Progressive suspension offers many different 444s .
When it comes to rear shocks a little longer shock will give you the travel Harley didn’t .

The Progressive heavy duty versions are usually too much spring for the vast majority. I'm 225, and do long vacation trips on a Wide Glide with 12.6 standard 412's. The bike looks like the Beverly Hill Billy's truck moving to California, with two back packs, tent, folding chair, arctic sleeping bag, and saddle bags. Just one click on the shocks past normal sag setting, and its all good. Rode my WG with the stock shocks for 18 years, and was totally blown away by the difference with the 412's.
As far as price goes.. it's absolutely insane, regardless of manufacture. I got the 412's because they are the cheapest quality upgrade.. the next level shocks are 300 to 1200 more after that. I could equip all my Chevy's with the most exotic shocks you can find for less then a pair of the 412's. It's just impossible to be a bike owner/rider and a virgin at the same time.
