How many miles out of a Sportster
#51
Unfortunately I cannot post photos from my work PC, but I turned over 287,000 miles this weekend (December 19, 2020)

No, I got 203,000 out of the original engine on my 2006 Sporty running the stock breathers and it's death was due to an oil blockage caused by a piece of cardboard that fell into the oil tank (long painful story).
At that point I was burning no oil but did have oil coming out the breathers so I probably could have used new valve guides

I'm curious about your transmission after so many miles. The 2006 had the new helical-cut gears in the transmission. My 2005 Sporty has the straight-cut gears. How would you compare the two in longevity? I've tried both and I can't tell the difference in feel, although the 2006 tranny is a little quieter.
The rest of the transmission looked fine to me. I plan on rebuilding the original engine this winter and am not planning on doing anything with the transmission other than new seals and bearings.
Also, the current engine in my Sporty is pushing 100,000 miles now with no issues (knock on wood...)

I can't speak to YOU personally.
I can only tell you why I moved on from a Sportster.
In many ways I loved my 04 1200R. It was a great back roads blaster, especially after waking it up with a stage 1.
But.....no matter what I did to it and how much money I spent, I couldn't seem to get it to be comfortable for me to ride any more than 50 miles at a clip. I did plenty of 150+ mile rides on it....but it beat the **** out of my back doing so
Suspension upgrades, Mustang seat, forward controls helped a little. But none of that could change the fact that the bike was just too small for me (6'1" 220lbs)
I wanted a bike that I could take on week long trips and the 1200R just wasn't that bike for ME.
I finally traded it in on a 08 Fat Bob, which was IMMEDIATELY more comfortable BONE STOCK than the Sporty was with thousands of dollars worth of comfort and performance mods.
After five years on the Fat Bob, I moved up to a Road King.
I miss both the Sporty and the Fat Bob and wish I could have afforded to keep them all.
But at 57 years old with a bad back (among other things) ....
The Road King with a backrest is what's comfortable to actually RIDE.

Stock breather with 90-degree rubber spark plug boots over the breather bolts, directing the vented hot oily fumes down a drain tube through the swing arm. No filter or catch can on the end. When I finish my ride, I place a paper towel on the garage floor underneath the tube and one drop will fall in the next few hours. Total cost for everything was less than $10. It looks completely stock except for the black drain hose which is almost invisible.

Here they are. You may have to trim a bit off to get them to fit flush against the stock air filter holes that the breather bolts used to go into (you have to trim the edges around the air filter receiver holes for this mating up). Also, some silicone lube makes the boots slide onto the breather bolts easier and some zip-ties will keep them from expanding from the heat from the breather bolts. I change out the boots @ 10K miles even though the air filter is usually dry and clean.

There is also HD part #63520-04 which is the rubber pipes from the screamin' eagle air filter kit.
