I have a 2006 XL1200C with 12,000 miles.
Can I just take out the riveted spring plate and replace it with 2 steel 1 friction.
I am a motorcycle mechanic and have all the tools.
...thanks Jerry

I put a set of Barnett plates (eliminating the spring plate) in my 1200 at around 30,000 miles. Kept the original spring, works fine, feels just a little smoother. The rivets were still intact in the spring plate, but all were pretty loose. If I ever buy another sportster, the spring plate comes out regardless of mileage, those brass rivets are a ticking bomb. I suspect quality control, a few last around 10,000 miles, many last over 50,000. Gets expensive when they fail.

Yes, you can just replace the spring plate alone that way. With the mileage mine had, I just thought replace them all while it's apart and I'll never have to do it again. Just to be clear about "all tools", do you have a spring compressor for Harley clutches? Hard to do without one. I got a Barnett along with the plates, worked fine. Also, soak the friction plate in oil for a while before putting it in. I let mine soak overnight.

That's my grandson in the sig pic below, putting the cover on after I did the clutch plates.

I put in a Barnett clutch in my '07 when I couldn't keep the clutch adjusted. Here's the thread on that. BTW, take a look at the parts I fished out of my clutch basket. It should make anybody get off the fence if they're still undecided about replacing the clutch.

Besides regular hand tools, I had to get a clutch spring compressor and couple of probes with hooked ends in order to fish out the old clutch plates.

I've been very pleased with how well the Energy One Clutch works.

It locks up nicely. You can see in the video below, that is pure roll-on throttle for the wheelies....no popping the clutch to get it up in the air.

As Imold said, yes you can just replace the spring plate...that is the weak link in the clutch. But while there, I would replace the whole pack. Also, the factory 1200 spring adequate, but if you want a more positive lock up, a stronger spring usually will make you realize that it was slipping a bit before without you even realizing it.

I also did the energy one pack swap, very good deal & product. my stock clutch pack was just on the verge of imploding when I bought the energy one pack so swapping out the unit was fairly easy, I did build my own clutch spring compression tool so it worked well.

All in all you must swap out the stock clutch implosion pack, mine made it to 60,000 miles.
