Default 1980 Sportster engine

Hey all! First off I want to introduce myself and thank everyone in advance for any info shared with me here. Ive read quite a few things off here before and decided it would be wise to register and get to know the community a little better as Iam starting my first build here soon. I hope every one had a wonderful labor day weekend!

I have a pretty simple question that I cant get much of a straight answer for. What kind of engine can I fit on my 1980 Harley Sportster XL1000? I would assume up to a 1000cc Ironhead correct?

But what year does this include, would a 1977 fit my 80 frame? Can I go any bigger? Pretty much my only question right now. I want to know what I need to start researching and shopping around for!

Thanks again all, glad to be here!

Wish I had an answer for you, but I don't know for sure. Here is what I would do in your situation.

I would try and find a Sportster only forum like www.xlforum.net and ask there as well. I would also go find an Independent HD repair/build business and go in and ask them. They might even have an engine, or know where one is. I would also go to the S&S website and look on there or even call them.
