Default Stop and plate light wiring

Hello, I've just added a vertical plate holder to my 09 Sportster 1200 custom and need instructions on wiring the stop/tail/plate light that came with the bracket. I've never done any wiring like this before and I understand it's just a matter of cutting the wires to the old light assembly and splicing them to the new wires but I also know things are rarely as easy as they seem on the surface. So if anyone has any tips about this job I would greatly appreciate your insights. Thanks.

Just determine which wires are hot and splice to the plate and tail. The other wire will be for the stop/brake light bulb. It's really that easy.

Doing the same thing tomorrow. Tmultra gave me this diagram. Splice or solder the wiring linking the black wire to ground and red to the blue wire from your original wiring for the license plate light
