I love my Nightster 1200xl. It's a comfortable weight and size and it just looks fabulous! BUT! The ride is so hard. Anyone have good recommendations for shocks and seat that will allow me to ride longer? After riding my partners Vulcan I want a smoother ride. I could consider trading up but wouldn't be able to afford a larger Harley and want to avoid the heavier weight. Ideally, I'd like to find a fix for my current bike. Any recommendations for saddle bags large enough for a laptop would be welcomed as well. I don't want to ruin the look of the bike.
if you can afford a nightster, you can afford a dyna or softail. for the same price as a new dyna ,you can get a used touring bike ~$11999USD .
learn to love the violence that is the sportster. you may be able to adjust the preload on the rear suspension right now and play games with seats until you get ahold of some soft shocks.
the nightster is lowered stock, if yours is still stock, adding some standard height shocks on the rear can remedy most of the issues you are having. search ebay for 12"+ shocks, they may run you about 50 bucks. folks are yanking the newer emulsion shocks of their bikes and lowering their rides (because people are silly)

putting a non-ssd laptop in a sattlebag is asking for problems from the hdd. heads-up.
have fun

road king air shocks are the best option for the $$. they work really good and from what i have seen most people get them for $100 or under. they are adjustable with a shock pump($40) any Shock pump NOT a bike pump. the nexxt option, is how much to you want to spend on your suspenion. 12"/12.5 should be your minimum shock length for you to really feel a difference. Grbrown is right about better rear shock expose weak forks...i personally when with progressive 444 in 12" after my 11 inch 440 just didnt cut it, then put the 4 inch cartridges from progressive in the forks. I would have loved to get the Ohlins but im sure there price is more then the 225 i spend on the progressive mono tubes. No matter what way you decide to go most shocks 12" 2.75 travel, 12.5 2.9 travel and 13" are 3.25?(progressives shocks) have limited travel, as to not bottom out on your fender. im not sure what the road kings travel is, but i believe they are 13" shock length. Ohlins is a lot of coin for sub 3.5 travel for 13 inch and under shocks...Also taller shocks raise your rear end, push weight to the fork. "stink bug" that why forks may need a upgrade if you go super tall in the rear.
