RE: oil qty for nightster
Also consider the fact that there's oil in the engine that doesn't all get drained, like in the heads, in the lifters, in the oil pump......so about 3 quarts sounds about right. And that's why you check your oil level afterward. Run the engine up to temp, and check the oil level. I'll ussaully re-check my level again after my first ride as well after doing an oil change just to make sure.

If you put in 3 quarts plus 4 oz in the filter. It's most likely over filled. It the dipstick checks out at full, it's overfilled. In about 3,000 miles, you be asking why you have oil coming out of your air cleaner and it's all over the right side of your bike. It's a common problem. Well known, but the MoCo will pretend they don't know what you're talking about. You should run the oil level just slightly above the add mark.

A turkey baster works pretty well to remove the extra oil. Much easier than trying to drain out 4 oz or so from the drain plug. What a mess that would make. When I overfilled mine, I used just some small plastic tube and syphoned (damn, I wish I could spell) the oil out. But someone else on the forum used a turkey baster..excellent idea.

I had this problem this weekend, drained the bike and then put in the 3.6 the manual says and way to much. SoI drained some out and checked the level.
Man this site is greatI was so confused about that,I re-read the manual several times trying to figure out what was going on. Thanks everyone.
