Tail and WV revisited
just my speed - posting to a thread that is several years old... but I rode the tail yesterday, 2 days after riding in WV, as a detour on my way to Florida. The tail is a great road but it is not above anything found in WV. The big benefit is the dedication of the tail to enthusiasts and lack of houses and trucks on the road. You could build the tail about anywhere in WV. Since the strip mines are leveling off the mountains in our effort to be the cheapest coal supplier to europe we might have a chance to do that with federal-state funding on reclaimed land some day. WV just needs some biker senators first. Here is my suggestion: have a WV version of the tail as part of the Hatfield-McCoy trail system and call it THE FEUD (since WV would be battling it out for top honors). Put 330 turns in the first 11 miles and lengthen it to 20 miles. You heard it here first from COLD_SURFER !!!!
1. WV roads are cut similar -- banked turns. This differs from eastern Kentucky that tends to have flatter turns. I'm talking 119 area KY and offshoots. My dad always said - WV carves around the mountain and TN runs straight over it. I guess it's a requirement because of the steep pitch and jagged lines of the mountains in WV.
2. WV roads tend to run out faster since they are not tourist park road -- they are real transportation routes that coal trucks and school busses run. sections of RT10 in Oceana and Harts offer as much fun- but the sections are only about 5 miles of
3. Hats off to the locals at the Tail for having campgrounds and so much support for motorcycles on mountain roads. Shame on the state for not raising a sign or two and recognize it more.
4. It's all good in TN and WV. Just get out there and ride them roads !!! NC gets high marks too on the western end.
