New to me sporty
Thought I'd take an opportunity to share my first Sportster. It's a 2001 1200C. My other ride is a 2012 Ultra Ltd, so this will be my fun/project bike. First projects will be to ditch all of the "touring" equipment and add a new solo seat and forward controls. Looking forward to being able to take the slightly more nimble ride around town. I've enjoyed my last few days looking at what everyone is doing with their sporties.

Sorry but I am partial to sporty baggers. Enjoy modding your bike...fun stuff.

Check the tire dates especially if it's low mileage, I've seen some with original tires over 10 years old; I wouldn't keep any over 5. Also, if it feels a bit squirely on irregular pavement, wiggles on tar snakes, that would be that original style Dunlop tire; change that to something else and it should be ok, not just the fault of the 21" skinny wheel. Put Avons on mine, tracks great now. My 1200 would break the Dunlops loose real easy on corners, too, but haven't had that happen since switching tires.
Depending on mileage, you might want to check the clutch plates; here's a link with info on that riveted clutch plate, must be the weakest link in a Sportster.

I really like Sportsters, not as comfy on long rides as my Tour Glide, but there's just something about them that makes mine a keeper, no matter what else I get to share the stable with it.

You're going to have fun, you have a great canvas you're starting with.

If I didn't have an Ultra sitting right next to it...I might think differently, but after a few years of only having that behemoth, I'm ready to downsize.

Yep, no saddlebags on my 1200 either. I do have a fairly large tail bag I can sit on the rear of the seat and tie to the sissy bar, holds a coat and pretty much any other gear I'd carry when I'm not staying out overnite - haven't done a ride like that on the sporty, not sure I want to. 8 hours is the most I've spent on it, and probably won't do that again, got a couple bikes that are way more comfortable.

I know that feeling. When I get on the Sporty, after being on the Softail, TG or SG, it feels like a mini-bike and I'm ready to roll...power to weight ratio is an adrenaline bump!
