Default Transmission oil / engine oil.

Am I being a bit thick here but the transmission oil is separate to the tank fed engine oil isn't it? My mate changed the small cover, above the Derby cover but not the gasket. A fair bit of oil leaked out whilst riding. Would that have been transmission oil or engine oil? Where do you fill it / check level?
Thanks

The oil in the left side cover is indeed separate from the engine oil, and lubricates the primary and transmission gears. So the leak is of transmission oil. Oil can spread itself far and wide while the engine is hot, so he may not have lost much oil, or enough to worry about. Details on changing oil and checking levels are in his owners manual. If he doesn't have one and his bike is 2005 or later he can download a copy from the H-D USA website - go to the Owners tab.

Also, in my limited experience, it is a good idea to not reuse gaskets, unless the manual says otherwise. And, even then, I'd probably go with a new gasket.

I would certainly have a new one close at hand, then if the reused one leaks the solution is immediately available!

If your talking about the small inspection cover to a Sporty engine, Ive had mine leak. A new gasket fixed it.
And I only did hand tight on the two screws.

I miss my Sporty. It was much easier to do the two boxes when changing oil. Plus the engine oil tank drain was much simpler with the worm clamp/plug.

Ride safe mates
